Whatever your purpose is for finding out such information, whether you want to explore the same field or to weed out some bad prospects for a College Major, there are plenty of things to learn from professionals who are considered as top earners in the land of opportunity. And if you think that the US is all about the glitz and glamour of those whose lives revolve around the media such as movie stars, professional athletes, news anchors and directors, you may be in for a surprise. None of these careers made it to the top 3 of high-paying careers in the US. In real life, people have to pay off their student debts or their tracker mortgage, there is no time to become a great musician or actor. You may be surprised as to who actually has the most dollars earned for both their hourly rate and annual income. Read on and be shocked, here are the three highest paying careers in the US:

1. Surgeons/ Medical Industry Practitioners
According to the Forbes Magazine and its article on America’s 25 Best-Paying Jobs in 2009, surgeons are the most highly-paid professionals, earning an annual income of $206,770. Training time is about 10 to 15 years especially for highly-skilled surgeons who are forerunners in their industry. Most surgeons, approximately 80% of them, carry with a very big debt in the initial stages of their careers mostly from student loans. After all, 4 years of medical school and 3 to 7 years of residency isn’t exactly an easy time. The reason why surgeons are earning the most dollars is because of the degree of specialty and complication their job involves. Holding a person’s life in your hands is very serious business, more so with specializations like those who operate on the heart or brain. As such, other professionals in the medical industry should follow after this list however to avoid redundancy, medical practitioners are bulked into one category. Following surgeons are anesthesiologists who earn $197,570 annually, orthodontists with $194,930, obstetricians and gynecologists with $192, 780, oral surgeons with $190,420, internists with $176,740, prosthodontists with $169,810, physicians with $165,000 and general practitioners with $161,490.

2. CEOs
Usually the highest paid official in the company also is burdened with the most responsibilities. He carries full command from day to day operations to the future plans of the company. He often answers to a Board of directors but smaller companies can do without this. The path to being a CEO is not as clear as the medical profession. There are those who work their way up the corporate ladder from being a mere manager to being head honcho. There are also those inspirations like Bill Gates or Michael Dell who were simply placed their by a combination of luck and their solid entrepreneurial skills. Even education is not necessarily a requirement as in the case of Bill Gates who even dropped out of school. Most of the time though, CEOs of companies will opt for a Masters Degree related to their field. CEOs usually earn an average of $160,440 annually. This does not involve the annual bonuses and extra perks included in their jobs since these are usually connected to the overall performance of the company. The more successful a company is, the more money the CEO gets.

3. Engineering Manager
Earning an average of $140,210, engineering managers are in command of such fields as research, planning, production and execution in various fields. They manage other highly paid professionals like natural science managers, petroleum engineers and even physicists. Becoming an engineering manager needs about 6 to 7 years of training. Heavy schooling is required. Most get a bachelor’s degree followed by a Master’s degree or a doctorate. The higher paid ones will need about 10 to 15 years exposure in their area. Following that, one must work his way up in order to gain technical knowhow of his field. Most of the time, he tackles a project full on, taking within his responsibilities such things as the financial aspect of the project. The job of engineering manager is too broad to discuss specifically, in one instance he may be in charge of a scientific project and at other times, an engineering manager may be in charge of a real estate venture.
